“This is My Truth”: Using Video and a multi-media interactive website to “Know Our Rights”

Participants in the unique 15 week Streetwise & Safe “know your rights” leadership development curriculum collectively:

• identify key messages for street-based LGBTQQ youth of color who are experiencing “quality of life” policing and policing of prostitution,
• decided what would be the most effective way of sharing this information, and
• and develop youth-designed and youth-led “know your rights” workshops and outreach materials.

Combining personal testimonies, information about laws commonly used to police and prosecute street-based young people, and “before” and “after” scenes based in real-life experiences, these workshops offer a unique take on traditional “know your rights” materials. Specifically tailored to the experiences of LGBTQQ youth of color, they cover not only street encounters and warrants, but also sexual harassment by police, inappropriate searches and placement of transgender and gender non-conforming youth youth, profiling for prostitution-related and other “quality of life” offenses, police response to domestic violence against LGBTQQ youth of color, Miranda rights, and arraignments.

Members of the SAS Community Education Team offer workshops around our videos and website to a range of audiences, including social service agencies, support groups, after-school programs, and community-based organizations.
